TV coverage of major events in focus of OSCE course in Turkmenistan
An OSCE-organized course on TV coverage of major events for editors and camera operators from Turkmenistan’s TV channels concluded on 5 May 2017 in Ashgabat.
The OSCE Centre in Ashgabat, in co-operation with the State Committee for TV, Radio and Cinematography of Turkmenistan, organized the four-day course to contribute to the efforts of the host Government with the aim of strengthening the professional capacities of TV journalists in line with modern standards.
“In 2009, the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media organized the Central Asia Media Conference which stressed the importance of international co-operation on journalism education and capacity building in the OSCE participating States,” said Ambassador Natalya Drozd, Head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat.
The training course addressed modern approaches to the TV coverage of major events, the concept and formats of news coverage, and methods of newsgathering for TV programmes.
“Turkmenistan regularly hosts large scale international conferences and forums addressing topical issues of the modern world, including energy and transport security, environmental protection and sustainable development. In this connection, TV journalists are expected to prepare accurate informative reports on the events that would be of interest to their audiences and would enhance the public awareness of the issues raised,” Drozd added.
International experts from the Russian Federation and United Kingdom presented the specifics of stand-ups, show-and-tell reportage, anchoring and presentation, live and as-live commentaries on TV. The participants also looked at the shooting and editing methods, scriptwriting skills, light and sound techniques.
As part of practical exercises, the participants worked in groups composed of editors and camera operators to produce short TV reports using the skills and technical guidelines covered during the training course.
The course brought together editors, producers, and camera operators from seven Turkmenistan’s TV and radio channels, including ‘Altyn Asyr’, ‘Yashlyk’ and ‘Turkmenistan’, as well as journalism instructors from Turkmenistan’s institutions of higher education.
