OSCE Election Observation Mission issues preliminary statement on Kazakhstan elections

ALMATY, 11 October 1999 - The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Election Observation Mission for the 10 October 1999 election of deputies to the Majilis of Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan has issued the following statement of preliminary findings. The Election Observation Mission will issue a comprehensive report on the Majilis election within a month.
The mission also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for assistance and co-operation during the course of the observation.
The six-page preliminary summary includes 10 preliminary conclusions as well as summaries of findings relating to legislative and regulatory framework, elections commissions, interference, participating in the electoral campaign, the media, electoral complaints and appeals, as well as election day and vote counting.
The OSCE Election Observation Mission in Kazakhstan was led by Mr. Ihor Ostash MP (Ukraine), vice-president of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. The mission included more than 100 international observers deployed by the OSCE throughout the country.
