#16Days – Join the OSCE in combating violence against women
43,600. That’s the number of women killed by an intimate partner or a family member worldwide in 2012, according to figures from the UN Office for Drugs and Crime. That’s almost four times the 11,133 people killed in terrorist attacks that year.
Because gender-based violence often happens within the confines of the home, every day, and in all our communities, cases of such violence don’t make the headlines in the same way that terrorism does. It’s therefore time to raise awareness of this scourge and mobilize our efforts to end it.
The OSCE is firmly committed to combating all forms of violence against women, and is supporting the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign. Starting on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and running through to 10 December – International Human Rights Day, we’ll be calling for “bringing security home” and creating a safe world for all women and girls.
Over the 16 days, we’ll be temporarily changing the colour of the OSCE logo on our website homepage to orange – the colour of the campaign.
We’ll also be posting daily stories and facts about the OSCE’s work in combating gender-based violence on our social media channels - Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Read, like and share to help us raise awareness. You can also join the conversation by using the hashtags #BringingSecurityHome, #endVAW and #16Days.
