30 Municipal Election Commissions start work in Kosovo
PRISTINA 4 September 2000
PRISTINA, 4 September 2000 - Municipal Election Commissions are an important part of the framework for ensuring transparent and efficient elections in Kosovo.
A total of 30 Municipal Election Commissions have been formed in Kosovo. Each comprises three to seven members appointed by the Central Election Commission. The Municipal Election Commissions will assist in the administration of the upcoming municipal elections at local level. They are responsible for a number of tasks, and must carry out their work in an impartial and apolitical manner.
The role of Municipal Election Commissions involves informing political parties, citizens initiatives, coalitions and independent candidates about their rights and obligations. They are also involved in providing voter information. In addition, they will help to train the polling station committees; make technical arrangements at the polling stations and ensure the proper conduct of polling, counting and compilation of the election results.
At this week's election briefing, OSCE will provide an overview of the Municipal Election Commissions, including the roles, the members and how members were appointed.
