Second expert meeting: Disinformation and media self-regulation

The second workshop will discuss reports on relevant efforts by journalists' associations and self-regulation bodies, so as to determine best practices and provide recommendations from the RFoM.
Audiences’ trust in news media, traditional or online, rests on the search for accurate and fact-based information. The principles of fairness and separation of facts and opinions are the core values of professional journalism worldwide. In abiding by them in their reporting, journalists build credibility with their audience and provide a public service. By blurring the lines between false and true, disinformation undermines public trust in professional quality journalism and its role in a democratic society.
The mechanisms to preserve journalism standards are well known: voluntary self-regulation, such as media councils and codes of practice. These enable communication with audiences and the public at large. Efforts are being made to apply these mechanisms in the domain of social media and other online speech.
