OSCE Mélange Programme infographic: Ensuring people's security and environmental safety
Mélange, a highly toxic, volatile, and combustible chemical substance that was extensively used in the Warsaw Pact countries during the Cold War, is a liquid rocket fuel component for short and medium-range missiles. After the end of the Cold War a number of OSCE states inherited large quantities of mélange, which was no longer needed by their armed forces and was stored in obsolete and deteriorating storage sites, posing a huge risk to human health.
Since 2003 the OSCE has been supporting its participating States in eliminating mélange – either by neutralizing it, or by safely transferring it to specialized chemical facilities where it can be safely converted to industrial products, such as agricultural fertilizers. This infographic covers the developments of the OSCE Mélange Programme during 2003-2014.
