Youth insights on Security Matters: Perspectives from Model OSCE Participants Western Europe
From 12 to 14 June, 26 young professionals from Western Europe had the opportunity to try their hand at diplomatic negotiations as they simulated the Helsinki Process by renegotiating the Helsinki Final Act as part of the 2023 Model OSCE event in Vienna. We spoke to some of the participants about their thoughts on youth and security.
What does security mean to you?
“Security means the idea that people can live in a peaceful and safe environment. For me, security is founded in the people (...) For our generation, environment is our top security priority. It’s something that cannot be done just by single states, but with a united vision of security.” Lorenzo, Italy
“Security is the ground that we can build upon for future generations and for ourselves. If we don’t feel secure in where we are and what we have, then we cannot evolve further. We have to take care of the basics first.” Yoana, Bulgaria
What are the main security issues facing young people today?
“My generation has a lot of topics we need to face, especially nowadays, because we have a very mixed security environment. We are facing several threats, including environmental issues. These things affect all of us.” Athina, Greece
What is the role of young people in security?
“For young people, instead of just being involved in the conversation, we should be more a part of the conversation. We should be setting the agenda along with other representatives.” Colby, Canada
“The role of young people in security is much like the role of young people in general – young people belong everywhere, because young people are everywhere.” Yoana, Bulgaria
