Policing
The two documents were drafted by the MIA, with the Office’s support, and in consultation with civil society groups between 2013 and 2020. They are currently under review and will serve as a baseline for the new Police Reform agenda for 2021 to 2025. The Office helps the MIA to establish police-public partnerships by supporting the activities of nine Public Councils since 2015 in different regions of Tajikistan. The Councils brought together civil society, community representatives and the MIA officers to support and promote the implementation of the local police reform. In 2019, two new Model Police Stations showcasing new community policing methods in rural districts , were opened and became operational and a third one in 2020.
Community responsive policing also drives the Programme Office’s support in combating domestic violence. Together with the MIA it has created, equipped and trained 15 Gender Sensitive PoliceUnits to lead law enforcement in responding effectively to domestic violence cases.
Responding to the growing threat of transnational organized crime, the Office further supported coordination and cooperation of law enforcement agencies on the issue of illicit drug trafficking. In this respect assistance was provided to the Drugs Control Agency(DCA) with the organisation of anation-wide meeting of the Coordination Council on Drugs Abuse Prevention. Contributing to the implementation of the National Strategy on Fighting Illicit Drugs Trafficking for 2013-2020, the Office supported among other activities the MIA and DCA in conducting Drug Awareness Campaigns for summer camps and sports competitions for youth under the motto “Youth and sports against Drug Abuse”.
